Senior Year: Surprises

Hi everyone!! It’s been awhile. YoungTri is starting up a school series, in which the contributors will detail some of their experiences in balancing school and athletics.

surprises

It’s crazy to me that some schools are already out! Glen Rock still has a month left!

This year has been… how can I even describe it?

Unpredictable may explain it best.

Going into this year, I thought I would end up doing triathlons in college. I had a list. I was going to apply to twelve schools. I had three or so top choice schools that I loved, and others that I really, really liked. The planner in me had decided on this since freshman year.

But then…

Things changed.

Next year, I’ll be rowing in college. I couldn’t be happier about the opportunity. I’m looking forward to what college has to bring.

The past few months, I’ve bonded with my crew team members and expanded upon my athletic horizons.

Of course, this doesn’t mean triathlons are a thing of my past. I’m continuing to compete in the summer!

This year hasn’t exactly been what I expected, but I’m super pleased with how it is turning out.

As you’re reading this, I want you to take a moment and think.

Really.

As corny as it sounds, reflect on your school year (or, if you aren’t a student, where you are right now) for a moment. What went right? What didn’t go so well?

This year, I learned to let go a bit - in the sense that things don’t always have to go exactly as planned to turn out in a positive manner.

Here’s a positive quote to turn to:

“Life doesn’t always turn out how you planned it. Sometimes, it turns out better.”

Athletic Couples: They Last - By Patrick LaBrode

We athletes have all been through it before. We date a new girl/guy from school. Everything is perfect at first. But then, they start getting frustrated with you because you spend more time swimming, biking, or running then you do with them. No late Friday night dates because you “have a long ride at 6am” or “a meet all weekend.” And you can even try to warn them that athletics will take up a lot of your time, but they don’t get how much time it really takes up, and the relationship ends badly.

But don’t worry athletes! There is a solution to this problem. Date other athletes! It’s just as simple as that. Dating other athletes takes away that stress of feeling bad that you can’t hang out with your significant other, because you will both be on the same schedule!  Another plus in dating an athlete is that you have the same interests, and can talk about sports 24/7. It’s seriously perfect.

Right now, I am dating an amazing girl, Monica Pruett (@MCPruett). We have been dating for over a year and 3 months! “Wow that’s a long time! How do you make that work?!” you may ask. Well it’s easy for us, because have the exact same schedule. We are both on the same high school and club swim team. That means we are both at practice Friday night and Saturday morning. So there is no complaining from either of us about not getting to spend enough time together. We are both tired at the same time, we plan dates around our swim schedule, and we get to spend time all day together at high school practice, school, and swim practice! It really is perfect. And we can talk about swimming/triathlons all day long. Seriously, our non-athletic friends hate when we start talking about sports! And since we are both athletes, we both like to eat healthy. This means that one of us won’t want to go out to a fast food joint while the other hates fast food.

This Valentine’s day, Monica and I will have a nice date at swim practice! But don’t worry, we will have a real date on the weekend. But we are both perfectly okay with going to swim on holiday breaks and days like Valentine’s Day. So next time you go to a race, or a camp, or join a new team, try and talk (flirt) with other athletes, it will be beneficial in the end!

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! (especially Monica Pruett!)

Epix Gear Review - Graffiti Print Tri Top and Shorts (By Katie Vandervalk)

Today, I deviated from my usual shorts-and-tee-shirt combination to try out an actual triathlon suit. As soon as I zipped on the Epix two-piece triathlon suit, I knew that there was no going back to baggy (and bulky) exercise clothes. I felt streamlined as I ran my three-hundred repeats. To be honest, I forgot that I was wearing it at all. The spandex shorts, due to a conveniently placed rubber strip around the thighs, didn’t ride up at all. They stayed comfortable and in place throughout the entire workout. The top also had a rubber strip positioned on the lower back, especially convenient because it prevented the mesh pocket area from moving around and becoming a distraction. (Which also helps during the bike leg of the race!) Epix triathlon gear captures the nature of workout clothing by allowing you to focus on the workout rather than adjusting your apparel.

Working out with the winter track team, the graffiti design matched my school colors: red, black, and white. The design (as I noticed while checking myself out in the mirror) was actually quite slimming without being revealing or too tight. To incorporate two-thirds of the triathlon experience into my day, I also biked home from practice. Wearing the Epix tri suit, I immediately felt a change. The padded cushioning added comfort to my old, hard bicycle seat and the outfit also seemed to function perfectly for cycling. Now I just need to head to the local YMCA and go for a swim! :)
